En del av programvaran man mäter med har ingen möjlighet att kalibrera kurvorna då är det än mer viktigt att använda rätt hårdvara. Gravis Ultrasound
”I tested the sample output of Gravis ultrasound card at 44.1 kHz output sample rate and 16 bit resolution. I tested only the line output. Here are the results of the measurement in the graph below. As you can see, Gravis Ultrasound performance is very good at high frequencies. The ouput level starts to fall at about 4 kHz and it has fallen 3 dB at 10 kHz and 9 dB at 20 kHz. This performance figure is not HiFi quality. ”
”I also tested how good GUS is in digitizing and playing back sampled data. Basic GUS has only 8 bit resolution in digitizing, so that it not useful for anything real audio processing. But for some purposes it is still useful to know the total frequency response (this is usually measured in computer magazine tests). I measured the record and output frequency response using line input an line output lines. I sended reference signal to line input, digitized it using sampling program (at 44.1 kHz sample rate) and then played it back and cheked the output level. ”

Sound Blaster 16 Value Edition PnP
I used the same method for microphone line testing as for line level signals. The difference is that I used lower signal level (0.078 Vrms) for microphone to avoid overloading the microphone preamplifier. Microphone input in Sound Blaster soundcards is mono and it has one special feature: there is some power (5.2VDC feed through 2.2 kohm resistor) available in microphone connector for electret microphone capsule. I did not need that power because I used Nakamichi as the signal source. Nakamichi had 600 ohm output impedance, which is also the value specified for soundblaster microphone. In the figure below you can see the results.

Accoring a newer test I saw in Tietokone magazine 1996, the frequency response in AWE32 has changed. The high frequency response has been become better, but the bass response have become worse: Bass response starts to drop at 200 Hz and drops 6..12 dB at 20 Hz depending on the input/output combinations. So the frequency response in new AWE32 cards is quite the same like in old SB16 cards:

Microphone input frequency response
The frequency response is very flat from 40 Hz to 20 Khz. In frequencies below 40 Hz the frequency response starts to drop a little bit (it has dropped 3 dB at 20 Hz frequency). So lowest bass frequencies are a little bit attenuated.
Frequency response of the card input and output. The measurements are made so that the audio is recorded with the soundcard and played back. The chart shows the real signal levels measured from the card output (maximim level I got with the settings used during this test was around -9 dBV which is quite typical signal level used in home audio systems).
